The Beautiful British Summer!

So it finally looks like summer has hit the UK! We've now managed THREE whole days of sunshine without any hint of cloud, rain, wind, or dare i say snow. Sadly it looks like summer is already set to finish later this week, or at least this installment of summer... Hopefully the nice weather will return sooner rather than later. Please...!

CEW Demo Evening Last Night

What a day, what a night! The annual CEW demo evening took place in central london last night - the venue was descended upon by 700 eager CEW members, all looking to sample the very latest and greatest in the beauty world.

The evening went extremely well, with Famous Dave proving very popular with many of the large retailers, our products also went down a storm with a lot of the magazine journalists, all keen to try our best-selling product from last season - Famous Dave's Tanning Mousse - nominated as Best New Self Tan in the Prestige category.

First in were the VIPs, which was all very civilised and relaxed, everyone took time to speak to the brands and selected the products that most appealed to them - we even managed to get a Famous Dave's Tanning Mousse to the CEW President as our brand caught her eye during her walk through the tables - and she mentioned that she'll be trying us out today! Then came the rest of the CEW members about half an hour later - and that's when all hell breaks loose! Everyone is SO keen to get their hands on the latest luxury beauty products to test for themselves before the brands run out of stock, it's almost a free-for-all in there! Never has the phrase 'you snooze, you lose' been more appropriate!

All in all, the event went perfectly for us - lots of people wanting to try out Famous Dave, lots of people already big fans of us, and hopefully lots of people voting for us over the coming month!!

We'll know our fate towards the end of March, when all the finalists are announced on the CEW website, so we'll be keeping everything crossed until then, and if you're a CEW member reading this, please don't forget to cast your vote for 'Best New Self Tan or Sun Care Product - Prestige' - as the one and only FAMOUS DAVE!!!

Truth about Tanning with Nicola Roberts

So who saw Nicola Roberts 'Truth about Tanning' programme on BBC3 last night? It was shocking to see how many people still flock to UV sunbeds without taking any precautions, and there's really no excuse for those 'tanning junkies' who are going on the beds EVERY day, where is their common sense for self-preservation?

Everyone these days knows the risks of over-exposure to UV rays, that's why there's so many daily moisturisers on the market with sun-block. Too much exposure = at the very least more wrinkles appearing sooner, and at worst skin cancer, which could kill you. So if there's a completely safe alternative that delivers the same results why don't more people choose it?

I don't agree with the UV junkies opinions that self tanning is messy, nasty, smelly, etc - it's simply all the reasons they're looking for not to use self tan and instead take the easy option of laying still on the sunbed. Sure, if you go down to the highstreet and buy a self tanner for £2 you're going to end up looking like an Oompa Lumpa stinking of biscuits, but it's the old adage - you always get what you pay for.

If these tanning junkies invested in a proper self tanner - one that costs more because it is made using more expensive ingredients and therefore gives you much a better and more natural looking tan - one that doesn't smell, streak, go messy, etc, then maybe they'd realise that there is a viable and easy alternative for them - they just need to realise this before it's too late!

I didn't however really agree with everything that Nicola said, she was very keen to promote paleness as 'the look' people should go for - the natural look, as she put it. Fair enough about overdoing the UV tanning, but people will always want to look confident in their own skin and most women will use some form of make-up to enhance their natural beauty, so why isn't fake tan also seen as make-up? People use lipstick to change the colour of their lips, eye make-up to shade and enhance the areas around the eyes, bronzer/blushers for the cheeks, so why shouldn't people also use a fake tan lotion in the same way on their skin? Fake tan lotion is to skin what lipstick is to lips, it's a completely safe form of make-up, so Nicola please don't try and push people away from fake tan when really it's just the cancer-inducing UV tanning you should be campaigning against.

The CEW Awards is known as the Beauty Oscars within our industry, so to be nominated for an award is very exciting for us. And the snow is back. Again...

Can you believe it? Last night is was cold alright, but no sign of another coating of snow to come. And so we wake up this morning to find London all white and crispy again! What's going on?

I was just getting used to being able to walk on the pavements again without fear of doing an involuntary river dance before ending up horizontal, and sure enough it's all back to get us again!

2010 is here! What's your New Year Resolution?

Didn't 2010 come around fast?! I had a great break over christmas, much needed, but then out of nowhere comes 2010. And it seems that no matter how much planning we do, NYE can simply never go to plan...!

We decided it would be nice to go into central London this NYE, get right down by the London Eye and watch all the fireworks and celebrations. We even went down there in the afternoon to see where would be best to stand. So after checking out the place we came back and started the celebrations here whilst we waited for a more sensible time to go back into town (and to avoid standing outside in freezing temperatures for hours and hours!). So we decided that we should head back in at around 10:00pm ish, to still give us plenty of time to jossle into position by the river - how wrong could we have been!!

As soon as we got out of the embankment tube exit, London event organisation kicked in - they'd shut down every road leading down to the Thames and we were all to embark on a one-way route (must have been 50,000+ people!). Unbelievably it was SO busy it took over an hour and a half of being sent one-way in the wrong direction before we ended up in the middle of the City, probably a good mile away from the fireworks themselves, (where they had kindly put up a sign saying 'overflow fireworks viewing area full - watch the fireworks live on BBC1'!!!) so we ended up seeing in the New Year outside St Paul's Cathedral with not as much as a firecracker in sight, but it was still a great atmosphere - until some lovely chap decided to spray a bottle of bubbly over us all and I ended up wetter than a drowning duck - and the irony is that not even a drop went in my mouth!! Still, whilst NYE didn't go quite to plan, ahem, so far this year has got off to a great start! All our customers seem to have come back after their holidays and have wanted to keep their lovely tans maintained with our tanning mousse and moisture tan products, so we're pleased to welcome everyone back!

I hope you all had a great new year party, and that you'll all have a successful 2010. I'll be trying to blog a bit more often this year - that's my new years resolution. Well, I may as well do one that I'm actually not going to break...not eating chocolate is soooo 2009. ;)
